If contaminated material is found the installer will either move to the side of the area or meet the requirements: The material that is removed from the system that has come into contact with waste water must be treated/decontaminated prior to final disposal. The material from the system shall be removed and stockpiled to allow for pathogen die-off. The material shall be placed in 6"-8" lifts, each lift covered with lime. The location for the stockpile shall be approved by the Health Officer and shall meet all requirements of an onsite sewage system (setbacks from surface waters and wells and vertical separation, etc.). It shall be covered and protected from erosion (covered with plastic or several 6 inches of uncontaminated soil and covered with straw, etc.). After the material has been stockpiled for a minimum of one year, the material may be used without site restrictions. Any alteration or modification from this process must be reviewed and approved by the Health Officer prior to start of work.
